History
Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) is an Institution of higher learning that received accreditation in October 2015 to begin transforming society through offering quality and affordable education. Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) is a private University licensed by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), under Reg no. UI.PL.028. It is not affiliated to any other institution. The university is wholly owned by an entity known as Mukaira Foundation Limited (MFL). The Mukaira Foundation wanted to bridge the gap by supporting Government in promotion of sciences by starting science based University.
Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) reached a historic milestone in 2025 as the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has cleared it for the grant of a Charter. This decision was made during the council’s 78th sitting on January 31, 2025, in accordance with Section 105(3) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act CAP 262.
According to an official letter from NCHE, the Council resolved to recommend the grant of Charter to the Minister of Education and Sports, who will then submit it to the President for final approval before the gazettement of the University’s charter status. This marks a major step in VUST’s journey toward achieving full accreditation and recognition as a fully chartered University in Uganda.
Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) is located in the heart of Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality, approxi- mately 50km from Mbarara on Mbarara – Kasese Road, branching off at Bushenyi Magistrate’s Court; about 500 metres on Nyaruzinga Road.
VUST aims to provide Science and Technology courses applicable to the rural environment, in a rural setting, with a view to improve the living conditions of the rural communities in the areas that the university serves and the World at large.

Facilities
The university has an administrative block in place which houses all the administrative offices like Vice Chancellor’ office, academic registrars, finance office, dean of students, University secretary, offices for deans of faculties and all the other administrative and academic.
The University has fully fledged resources to accommodate all programmes with enough lecture spaces. There are enough and well trained academic staff to facilitate the programmes.
Big room of 174.14 sq meters accommodating 160 students. The library has a total of 5850 books – 3467 Hard cover & 2383 eBooks.
2 rooms each of size 107.07 sq meters accommodating 20 students each are available to facilitate student learning.
Field Laboratories
There are a number of field Laboratories currently being used. These include
- Grape vineyards
- Vegetable gardens
- Piggery (pisty in place)
- Forests (eucalyptus & pine trees –available for student practical learning.
- Use of external institutions like MBAZADI in Mbarara and Kabeihura farm in Kyamuhunga Bushenyi district.
Demonstration gardens of Tea, coffee, banana plantation are in place for students practical learning.
- Big room of 58 sq meters accommodating 100 students. The IT/internet infrastructure include Internet connectivity in place for office, library, computer lab already in place.
- Internet connectivity in library & computer lab to cater for more computers, as well as access to WIFI.
- There are enough computers (54 Computers) giving a ratio of 1 computer to 10 students
A clinic is in place that offers first line treatment. Extreme cases are referred to nearest health facilities for further management.
The university good and well facilitated students hostels located with the university premises. Students willing to stay in the hostel pay shs. 300,000/= per semester. Students have the benefit of leaving their property during holidays without additional payment. Note that water and electricity payments are catered for in the total hostel charge
Valley University has a very good and conducive learning environment, free from noise and pollution. Students enjoy the cool breeze from the surrounding serene environment. This environment facilitates group and or individual learning activities.
