Valley University of Science and Technology Launches Climate Change Campaign through use of Champions Club
Bushenyi, October 24, 2024 – Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) has today officially launched the Climate Change through the Champions Club, a student-driven initiative aimed at fostering environmental awareness and action both within the University and the broader community. The club’s formation marks a significant step in VUST’s ongoing efforts to address climate change through education, advocacy, and community engagement.
The VUST Climate Change Champions Club kicked off its activities with a tree-planting campaign, held around the University compound. This event, spearheaded by Dr. Benard Nuwatuhaire, who serves as the club’s patron, saw enthusiastic participation from students and the Guild Leadership. The campaign aims to beautify the campus while contributing to environmental conservation efforts. By planting trees, the club is laying the groundwork for a greener, healthier future.
Addressing the students, Dr. Nuwatuhaire emphasized the importance of student involvement in environmental issues. “This initiative is not just about planting trees; it’s about instilling a sense of responsibility among students toward the environment. The climate crisis worldwide is real, and it’s our duty to act now and make an impact, both within the University and beyond,” he said.
The VUST Climate Change Champions Club aims at creating a community of students who are not only aware of climate change issues but are actively contributing to solutions. The club’s activities will extend beyond campus borders, with future plans to carry out similar tree-planting campaigns and other environmental projects in surrounding communities. These efforts aim to engage the public, especially youth, in climate change mitigation and environmental preservation.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Robert Mumbere, one of the club’s founding members expressed optimism about the future impact of the club’s work. “We are excited to take on this role as environmental stewards. Through this club, we hope to raise awareness about the climate crisis and inspire others to join us in protecting our planet,” he said.
With the growing global concern over climate change, initiatives like the Climate Change Champions Club underscore the critical role universities can play in environmental advocacy and action. By empowering students to lead the way in addressing environmental issues, VUST is helping shape a generation of climate-conscious leaders ready to make a difference.
Valley University of Science and Technology continues to emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship in its academic and extracurricular programs. The VUST Climate Change Champions Club is poised to be a key player in furthering this mission, bringing the University community together in the fight against climate change.
